Jeanne Ray­naud and Corentin Ver­coor are the nation­al final­ists of the Dyson Award 2021 with their project Slive. Anoth­er great award for the UTC and its Design department.

Jeanne Ray­naud and Corentin Ver­coor are UTC under­grad­u­ate stu­dents of the Indus­tri­al Design Engi­neer­ing (IDI) of the UTC Major in Mechan­i­cal Engi­neer­ing. At the end of August, they reached the sec­ond step of the podi­um of the pres­ti­gious James Dyson Award com­pe­ti­tion orga­nized by the Dyson Foun­da­tion. This result opens the doors to the inter­na­tion­al com­pe­ti­tion for these two lau­re­ates. Super­vised by Emmanuel Cor­bas­son, a lec­tur­er-cum-research sci­en­tist work­ing in the IDI pro­gramme at UTC, Jeanne and Corentin focused on the prob­lem of noso­co­mi­al con­t­a­m­i­na­tion. «A top­i­cal sub­ject, noso­co­mi­al con­t­a­m­i­na­tions are one of the major issues of hos­pi­tals today» as under­lined by Doc­tor Christophe Boy­er, head of the SMUR/ SAMU ser­vice of the Teach­ing Hos­pi­tal, CHUAmiens- Picardie who accom­pa­nied these stu­dents through­out the project. 

Protection and comfort 

The Slive project con­sists of antibac­te­r­i­al sleeves for hos­pi­tal care work­ers. It allows them to stay warm and com­fort­able while fight­ing against noso­co­mi­al infec­tions. Indeed, med­ical staff are oblig­ed to wear short sleeves in order to pro­tect patients from pos­si­ble con­t­a­m­i­na­tion risks. In design­ing their Slive, Jeanne Ray­naud and Corentin Ver­coor took into account the med­ical cleans­ing of fore­arms while ensur­ing that the device was adapt­ed to the hos­pi­tal laun­dry ser­vice by going to the Amiens- Picardy Uni­ver­si­ty Teach­ing Hos­pi­tal. In addi­tion to Emmanuel Corbasson’s guid­ance as part of their design course at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Tech­nol­o­gy in Com­piègne, the two stu­dents ben­e­fit­ed from the exper­tise of Drs Boy­er and Domisse. For the past nine years, Emmanuel Cor­bas­son, a teacher­re­searcher, has accom­pa­nied the stu­dents every year on the Dyson Award. With eight podi­ums, includ­ing five nation­al firsts, he has enabled UTC to be the most suc­cess­ful school at the James Dyson Award France.
